Following are the most common problems encountered with Deep Sea Trophy Fishing. Most of these problems are caused by the computer not meeting all of the minimum system requirements, or problems with Direct X compatibility.
"GRAPHICS INITILIZATION FAILED", "CANNOT FIND DDRAW.DLL" or "DDRAW.DLL CAUSED AN ILLEGAL OPERATION"
Deep Sea Trophy Fishing requires that DirectX version 5 is installed on your computer, and also requires that all of your system hardware is 100% DirectX 5 compliant.
Re-install DirectX version 5 from the CD, and overwrite your current drivers. For detailed instructions on how to do this, see the section below labeled "DirectX Installation". Then, reboot your computer and try playing the game again.
If the error still occurs, then you may need to update your video card drivers.
Most video card manufacturers keep the latest versions of these drivers available on their websites for free downloading.
If you already have DirectX 5 and the latest drivers installed, try manually setting your screen resolution to 640x480 with 256 colors. If you need help with this, please refer to our Windows 95 Video Troubleshooting FAQ.
"Sound Initialization Failed"
You need to update your sound card drivers. Most sound card manufacturers keep the latest versions of these drivers available on their websites for free downloading.
This error usually occurs in systems that do not meet the minimum system requirements needed to play the game. Ensure that your processor speed or memory is adequate to run Deep Sea Trophy Fishing and that you have no other programs running while playing.
If this does not fix the problem, re-install DirectX. For important information on how to do this, see below in the section entitled "DirectX Installation".
"Cannot Locate MTRR.VXD" Error
You can copy this file directly from the Deep Sea Trophy Fishing CD-ROM into your Windows system folder like this:
1. Double click on My Computer, then right-click on your CD-ROM drive.
2. Select open, then double click on the DirectX folder.
3. Right-click on the file named MTRR.VXD, and select COPY. You will now need to place the file into your Windows system folder.
4. Double-click on My Computer, then on your C: drive, then on the Windows folder, and finally on the System folder.
5. Right-click on any white space inside of the window that appears, and select Paste.
6. Then try running the game again.
Lockups
Make sure that you have closed down all other applications prior to installing or running Deep Sea Trophy Fishing. Other applications may conflict with the game, or use up valuable resources needed to run the game properly.
If you are using Windows 98 and your computer has a 266mhz or faster processor, try turning down your graphics acceleration like this:
Click on Start, then on Settings, then on Control Panel.
Now open the System panel, then click on the Performance tab.
Adjust the graphics acceleration to "none" or a notch above "none", then click on OK.
Also, be sure that your current video mode is set to 640x480 and 256 colors.
Game Shrinks to Taskbar
This problem is usually the result of a problematic DirectX video driver. To see if this is the case, try manually setting your screen resolution to 640x480 and 256 colors before starting the game. To do this, follow these steps:
First, right-click on the desktop and choose Properties from the pop up menu.
Then, click on the Settings tab.
Set the color palette to 256 colors, and slide the Desktop Area slider to 640x480. If your video card allows you to configure a virtual desktop independently of the screen resolution, make sure that that setting is also set to 640x480.
Click OK, restart your computer, then run Deep Sea Trophy Fishing. If this solved your problem, there may be an updated video driver available from your computer or video card manufacturer that will solve the problem permanently. Many manufacturers keep updated drivers available on their websites for download
Your video hardware may have an option to reduce screen flicker.
Click on the Start button, and select Settings, then Control Panel, and then double click on the Display icon. If there is an option labeled "Page flip during vertical blank", or "Page flip during vertical retrace", turn it on. This should eliminate flickering problems.
Contact the video card manufacturer to get the latest drivers for your card. You may also try to reset the refresh rate for your monitor. Contact your monitor or computer manufacturer for instructions on how to do this.
Click your right mouse button on My Computer and select Properties
Then left-click on Performance, and finally on Graphics.
Turn down acceleration a few notches, then try running the game again.
Continue doing this until your problem goes away.
Sound Problems
If sounds work fine in other applications, but not in Deep Sea Trophy Fishing, make sure that DirectX 5 is installed, and that you have the latest drivers for your sound card installed as well. For detailed instructions on installing DirectX version 5 from the Deep Sea Trophy Fishing CD, see the section below labeled "DirectX 5 Installation".
